The best alternative to high street letting agents
Last week I was looking for a gift. I knew exactly what I wanted.
Stepping into the large store with its recognisable branding, I felt I had come to the right place. Their shelves were beautifully stocked, the décor was clean and elegant and the staff lovely and polite. I approached one such team member and explained what I was looking for; their puzzled expression started to worry me.
A supervisor and a manager later, I have to admit I was getting a little tired of repeating myself. They promised to investigate further, and would come back to me – I’m still waiting.
Feeling disappointed, I bumped into a friend who told me of a tiny place close by. First impressions: it didn’t have the same strong image as the brand name, but it looked good.
Unlike the large store, this was owner-operated, and what a difference it made. I explained what I wanted, and the owner knew exactly what I was looking for – even better, he gave me options. The knowledge this guy had was incredible. “Any issues, I’m just on the end of the phone” he said, as he gave me a card with his mobile number on it.
He reminded me of me. South Hampstead Residential is certainly not the biggest company in the area, and we don’t have massive corporate budgets to spend on branding and advertising. The attention to detail, for us, is how we perform for each client.
Sometimes we can get swept away with the illusion that bigger is always better, but it doesn’t matter whether it is retail or lettings, there can be a huge difference between perceptions and reality.
Lettings for me involves a symbiotic relationship which relies on the landlord, letting agent, and tenant having a shared experience. If one element shifts, it affects the balance for everyone.
